My core interests are normal and pathological vascular structure and function and the effect of cardiovascular risk factors: ageing, diabetes, obesity and specially hypertension. My initial studies were aimed at the role of innervation in regulation of vascular function in the cerebral vasculature. Since 1991 I have been mainly involved in the study of functional and structural alterations of arteries during ageing and in genetic and experimental models of hypertension and the effect of antihypertensive treatments
Present research lines:
1. Development of techniques based on fluorescence confocal microscopy & image analysis to study 3-Dimensional organization of blood vessels and their application for biomedical research.
2. Role of elastic fibers in the mechanical properties and strength of blood vessels in health and disease.
